BTS’ SUGA & RM DEBUTS ON BILLBOARD’S HOT 100 SONG WRITERS

BTS have always written most of their music for their albums since debut, they have also produced several songs with RM being the most member with credits. Being given the freedom to write and produce their own lyrics, beats and music, has led to BTS being the greatest band in the world right now. Music is the lyrics that make up the melody then gives the feelings and emotions that people feel. It is no surprise that this week RM and Suga debuted on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 Song writer. RM takes no. 3 while Suga took no. 9 on the released charts.

SUGA is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. In 2016, he released his first solo mixtape, Agust D. He released his second mixtape, D-2, on May 22, 2020. The Korea Music Copyright Association attributes over 100 songs to Suga as a songwriter and composer, including Lee So-ra’s “Song Request”, in which he also featured. Some of his works include co-produced “Eternal Sunshine” from Epik High’s Sleepless in EP (2019), and Suran’s “Wine”, which won best Soul/R&B track of the year at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.  In January 2018, Suga was promoted to a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association.

RM is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. As a solo artist, he has released two mixtapes: RM in 2015 and Mono in 2018. The Korea Music Copyright Association attributes over 160 songs to RM as a songwriter and composer, including fellow BTS member Jimin’s solo song “Promise”, which he co-wrote. RM also has written music for his various features, and two songs for former Big Hit Entertainment labelmate Glam prior to their disbandment. SUGA (Min Yoongi) and RM (Kim Namjoon) share a deep and enduring friendship that goes beyond their professional relationship as members of BTS. Over the years, they have displayed mutual respect, support, and understanding, becoming pillars of strength for each other in both personal and professional matters.

RM and Suga first met during their trainee days at Big Hit Entertainment, where they bonded over their shared passion for music and rap. Both were underground rappers before joining BTS, and this background helped them connect. RM, as the group’s leader, recognized SUGA’s talent early on, and SUGA, in turn, respected RM’s leadership skills and vision for the group. From the start, the two shared an affinity for creating meaningful music that reflects their personal experiences. As they navigated the tough trainee life, they relied on each other for encouragement, learning how to balance their individual styles while working together in a group setting.

One of the most significant aspects of SUGA and RM’s friendship is their shared love for music production and songwriting. Both are prolific producers and lyricists for BTS, contributing to the group’s distinct sound. They have worked closely on many tracks, often blending their unique approaches to create songs that resonate with listeners on a deep emotional level. Tracks like "Ddaeng" (a rap line collaboration between Suga, RM, and J-Hope) and "Respect" (a song from the Map of the Soul: 7 album where RM and SUGA engage in playful banter about the concept of respect) showcase their synergy in music. In interviews, they have expressed how much they enjoy working together, bouncing ideas off one another and pushing each other to evolve as artists. Their creative partnership has shaped much of BTS’s discography, from hard-hitting rap tracks to introspective ballads.

RM has often praised SUGA for his authenticity and depth in songwriting. In contrast, SUGA has commended RM for his leadership and intellect. This mutual admiration is evident in how they speak about each other during interviews and live broadcasts. During BTS’s speech after winning the Artist of the Year award at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), RM gave a heartfelt shoutout to SUGA, crediting him as a crucial part of the team and someone who brings immense value to their music. SUGA, in return, has publicly shared how RM’s leadership has helped him through challenging times, acknowledging how much he appreciates RM’s efforts in guiding the group.

Their support extends beyond just music. SUGA has been open about his struggles with mental health, and RM has been there for him, offering emotional support. RM, known for being reflective and philosophical, has turned to SUGA for advice on handling pressure and expectations, especially as the group’s fame skyrocketed globally. While they are serious when it comes to work, SUGA and RM also share a playful and lighthearted dynamic. This is often seen during BTS’s variety show appearances and live broadcasts, where they banter and tease each other in a way that highlights their comfort and closeness.

A memorable moment was during a BTS Run! episode, where RM and SUGA had to work together to complete challenges. Their differing personalities—RM’s more outgoing nature and Suga’s introverted, calm demeanor—led to hilarious interactions, but ultimately, they worked together seamlessly, showcasing the strength of their bond. As the leader, RM has shouldered much of the responsibility for the group’s direction, both musically and professionally. SUGA, while not the official leader, often acts as RM’s confidant and supports him in decision-making. SUGA has shared in interviews how he sometimes steps in to help RM when the pressure becomes overwhelming. He has mentioned that, as someone who understands RM’s burdens, he feels responsible for easing some of the weight off his friend’s shoulders.

In return, RM has been a source of inspiration for SUGA. RM’s leadership style, characterized by his humility and wisdom, has been a guiding force for SUGA. Both have acknowledged that their friendship is one of mutual growth—they learn from each other, not just as artists but as individuals. As BTS continues to break records and achieve global success, the bond between SUGA and RM remains a cornerstone of the group’s strength. They have grown from being young trainees with dreams of making it in the music industry to international superstars who inspire millions of fans worldwide.

SUGA and RM’s friendship is more than just a professional relationship; it’s a partnership built on trust, respect, and understanding. They’ve been through the highs and lows of fame together, and their shared experiences have only deepened their connection. Whether working on music or simply sharing a quiet moment of reflection, RM and SUGA’s friendship will undoubtedly continue to play a pivotal role in their personal lives and BTS’s future. As SUGA continues to recover from his shoulder surgery, RM has been there to support him, both as a leader and as a friend. Their bond serves as a reminder of the strength found in friendship, and ARMY can look forward to more heartwarming and impactful moments between the two as they continue to make music and memories together.
